Shopping Experience

The store that I chose to investigate is Hollister.  I have not been in this store since it first gained popularity when I was a freshmen in high school.  That one time I did shop there, I bought one pair of jeans because it was the cool thing to do.  This is the only Hollister item I own.
My recent experience in the store was the exact same as it was a few years ago.  Not very pleasant.  The music is too loud to even think, which is weird for me to say because I like loud music, but in a store where I am trying to shop I find it obnoxious.  I cant think with it being that loud.  And I'm pretty sure I lost some brain cells from inhaling so much of the heavy cologne/perfume scent.  It is also very dimly lit in there, overall I do not like the how the store is set up, nor the vibe it creates.
The clothes in there are all pretty basic, not much originality.  They try to give off a "laid back California vibe" but its pretty much the same stuff every year; graphic tees, polos, sweaters, and camis.  The people who buy their product range from high school to college age.  It's pretty much exactly like American Eagle but with a different store title.  All in all it is just way too preppy and boring for me.  I would probably appreciate the store more if everything were not so over priced.
The misery of shopping in there, plus the over priced items makes me walk past the doors of Hollister each time.  And this experience proved no different.

"The Persuaders"

I thought the video provided a very interesting look into the world of advertising.  When I stop and think about all of the advertising "clutter" that constantly surrounds us, it  is impossible to predict where the industry will go from here.  Advertising companies are becoming more and more creative in order to gain attention for the brand.  Ads are everywhere, I wonder if it will become so that we have no personal space, no break from advertising.
I do believe consumers associate aspects of their self with certain brands.  The things you buy represent an insight to your likes and needs.  People form extreme loyalty to certain brands because they become emotionally attached.  This is what advertisers are trying to create with all of their products.

RAW Projects

I visited the beer goggles exhibit, as well as the drama skit that was conducted outside of the student center.
*I think the beer goggles exhibit was effective, a lot of people viewed their message and it was a high traffic area on campus so it received a lot of attention.  The only thing I would have recommended is to put a "look through here" sign above the goggles on the door.  Because some students were not aware that there was any significance to the goggles on the door.
*The student center skit was entertaining but not very eye catching because it wasn't obvious that they were doing an exhibition.  Many people hang out at that entrance of the student center, so they blended in with the crowd too much.  It would have been more obvious if they were to have matching t-shirts or bandanas or something of the sort to draw more attention and unify them as a group.

Brands

A month ago I purchased a new Verizon Wireless phone. When I think of Verizon, the first five things that come to mind would be good service, reliable, cheap, cell phone, and the commercial phrase 'can you hear me now'. My perception of this brand was shaped from commercials, and my parents experience with the network. The top ten common words and phrases for Verizon are as follows: phone, wireless, cell phone, can you hear me now, phones, network, crap, expensive, annoying, and sucks. My perception of the Verizon brand matches pretty well with what others thought. The only difference is that I do not have many negative things to say about Verizon because I have had good service and have enjoyed my customer relationship with the company. I do not find the network to be crap, or suck. I think Verizon is one of the better networks for service and have been satisfied with my phones.

My Favorite Advertisement

The recent Guitar Hero advertisement with Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps, and Tony Hawk, is hilarious.  These four men are extremely popular, and extremely talented at their individual sports which makes it easy for all viewers to recognize who they are.  I think it is humorous that they are playing guitar hero together in their underwear, a tribute to the famous movie scene with Tom Cruise.  Kobe Bryant is my favorite in the ad.  He plays the lead singer and does a great impression with his dance moves and lip singing.  This is  funny to me, because he is portrayed in a very macho-man-serious-manner through the media.  These four men do a great performance in the commercial and they all appear to be having a blast.
This advertisement is successful because it catches the viewers attention, and keeps the attention until the end.  The target audience for this commercial includes almost anyone because the athletes are so well known for their achievements.  I'm sure this advertisement was a huge hit with many of the fans from young children to adults.  When the audience sees a prominent group of athletes having a blast playing guitar hero, the viewers will want to join in on the fun as well.  If I had enough money I would definitely purchase this product because it looks like a game you could enjoy during a party, with your family, or with a few friends.
